These are the Championship clubs with parachute payments that Bristol City must overcome

According to one online commentator this week, it's tantamount to a head start in the league every year.

Bristol City will have to contend against several clubs armed with cash injections from making it up to the English top tier as they do every season: Premier League parachute payments.

The six teams listed below will all will pick up the following payments for either a first year payment after relegation (Cardiff City, Fulham and Huddersfield Town) or after spending a second year outside the Premier League (Stoke City, Swansea City and West Brom).

According to our sister website Gazette Live, Middlesbrough and Hull City are not eligible for a third term payment following relegation two years ago.

However, Sunderland are after relegation from the Championship a year ago. The Black Cats will receive a payment of £15m to help them recover from their spell in the English top tier as the north east side look to stabilise their financial outlook.

Whether such payments are ethically sound remains a debating point with the Premier League looking to help clubs bridge the financial gap to the top division in English football.

But those payments below go a long way to explaining how leading second tier strikers such as Dwight Gayle can be brought in at the Hawthorns.

As for Bristol City they will need to find a way to negate the financial advantages that these six clubs have over them - by punching above their weight given their budget or by trading well this summer.

That fee from the Lloyd Kelly £13m deal may need reinvesting smartly.
