These are the biggest 200 companies in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire's biggest companies have been revealed today in the annual Top 200 list.

Boots UK once again takes its place as the county's largest business in the report, published by Nottinghamshire Live and the Nottingham Post, with a turnover of £8.3 billion.

The organisation, now part of Walgreens Boots Alliance, is one of four companies which have reported a turnover of more than £1 billion.

The other three businesses have also retained their positions from 2018, with car dealership giant Pendragon coming in second position, followed by Sports Direct and Wilko.

This year's list was compiled by the Department of Economics at the Nottingham Business School, part of Nottingham Trent University.

Will Rossiter, associate professor at the school, said: "This year many firms will have been affected by ongoing uncertainty associated with Brexit.

"In this context it is interesting to note that the threshold for inclusion in the Top 200 this year has risen to around £22 million of annual turnover, from £20 million in 2018."

In addition to Nottinghamshire's biggest employers, there are several new firms which have made the Top 200 this year.

This includes Robin Hood Energy (59), student discount provider My UNiDAYS (163) and Blades Restaurants (165), which operates several McDonalds stores in Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Live revealed the Top 200 during a special event held at World Service on Wednesday morning, October 30.

Entrepreneurship was a theme of the event, with business owners from across the county represented.

Elizabeth Fagan, non executive director at Boots UK, spoke of how it was entrepreneurship that helped turn a small health shop in Goosegate, Nottingham, into Boots, which now has hundreds of stores across the UK and is celebrating its 170th year.

During the event, Nottinghamshire Live Editor, Mike Sassi, added: "If ever we needed an example of the benefits of taking risks, it is this Top 200 list of Nottinghamshire's most successful businesses.

"The importance of entrepreneurship runs right through our Top 200.

"Entrepreneurs are usually successful because they know no fear. They are fearless, they are focused and the entrepreneurs in our Top 200 are helping to create the jobs and the revenues that drive Nottingham's economy."

An award was handed out at the end of the event to Nottingham's biggest company, Boots UK.

There were also awards handed out this year for Nottinghamshire's biggest services group, car dealership giant Pendragon, and the biggest manufacturing group, which went to Langley Holdings.
