These are the big planning changes coming to the historic village of Uphall

The conservation area boundary around historic Uphall will be redrawn.

West Lothian Council’s executive has agreed to boundary changes following an exhaustive survey of the village by planning officers engaging with local people about changes.

Principal planner officer Chris Alcorn told a meeting of the executive there had been significant development in the village in the 40 years since the area had been designated with conservation status.

Areas such as School Place, Howieson Green and Manse Park are areas of modern development and are of a different style to the historic centre of the village.

The proposed boundary alteration will exclude such developments.

The new boundary alteration would remove a total of 246 properties from the conservation area.

These include:

  • North and south side of Alexander Street
  • School Place and garage in West Main Street
  • Housing areas on north side of East Main Street
  • Howieson Green and Manse Park
  • Individual buildings in Ecclesmachan Road and South Middleton
  • Glebe Place and Wyndford Avenue

There is a proposed boundary extension in Millbank Place and Forkneuk Road which are properties with historic value that were excluded from the original designation, but, on review, have retained their overall architectural and historic character.

Lime trees at 14-17 Howieson Green are considered to have townscape character and appear part of the original Crossgreen Farmhouse landscape.

These trees will be assessed to determine their suitability for protection by tree preservation order.

Local councillor Chris Horne said: “Congratulations on the work done by yourself and Sonia [a trainee planner] in this report and in getting round the doors and speaking to people.”
