These are some of the best cafés in Bristol

Bristol is blessed with a healthy dose of cafés and restaurants - and our food critic Mark Taylor can probably safely claim to have tried more than most.

Read on for a run-down of some of the city's best cafés, based on excerpts from Mr Taylor's reviews.

All of the following establishments achieved prized four-star ratings when they were visited (oh-so-close to those five stars of lore).

How many are you familiar with?

Murrays (reviewed April 2017)

THE VERDICT:

Top drawer café food conjured from high quality ingredients and served at prices affordable enough to warrant regular return visits, Murrays brings a delicious slice of Little Italy to Park Row.

RATINGS:

Overall: Four

Food: Four

Service: Four

Ambience: Four

Value: Five

George's Restaurant (reviewed February 2017)

THE VERDICT:

Despite the increased competition and changing tastes since it first opened 47 years ago, George’s isn’t trying to be anything it’s not. It’s not trendy, it’s not cool but it still serves simple, excellent value food for the locals and that alone should ensure its survival for many more years to come.

RATINGS:

Overall: Four

Food: Three

Service: Three

Ambience: Three

Value: Five

The Rest Café (reviewed March 2019)

This is as good as bacon sarnies get (Mark Taylor)

THE VERDICT:

It might have one of the highest footfalls of any café in the city with it Temple Meads location, but The Rest just may be the best value pitstop you’ve never been to and it serves one of the best bacon sandwiches in Bristol.

RATINGS:

Overall: Four

Food: Four

Service: Four

Ambience: Three

Value: Five

Blue Sky café (reviewed March 2019)

THE VERDICT:

A perfect fry up and a final bill of £4.70, this was easily the cheapest meal Mark Taylor has reviewed on these pages for many years and it was the best fiver I've spent for a while.

RATINGS:

Overall:  4

Food:  3.5

Ambience:  3.5

Value:  5

Service:  4

Spicer + Cole (reviewed February 2019)

THE VERDICT:

It’s fourth time lucky for the consistently impressive Spicer + Cole, which seems a natural fit for the impressive new Finzels Reach development, which may well become the place to be this summer.

Overall:  Four

St George’s Bristol

THE VERDICT:

St George’s Bristol has entered an exciting phase with its new extension and this highly regarded music venue now has the food to match with a café-bar that’s a destination in its own right.
