Donald Tusk has dealt a blow to Theresa May’s hopes of amending her Brexit deal as he declared the agreement was “not open for renegotiation”.

The European Council president’s remarks came after Prime Minister Mrs May pleaded with EU leaders for concessions to avoid a disorderly no-deal outcome.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Mr Tusk said the union would stand by the deal and intends to proceed with its ratification, adding: “It is not open for renegotiation."

EU leaders did however give Mrs May assurances that they would attempt to agree on Brexit by 2021 so that the controversial backstop is never triggered.
