Theresa May still in Brexit denial after Tory local election drubbing in England

Theresa May just lost more than 1300 Tory councillors – but you wouldn’t know it to listen to her.

Instead, the Prime Minister chose to ignore the carnage of the English elections and pretend all is rosy in the garden.

May was in Aberdeen for the Scottish Tory conference and was clearly hoping nobody had noticed the utter drubbing south of the Border.

Clearly, her speech had already been prepared. And the gloom of a massive voter backlash did not fit the narrative.

May just did what she always does.

She attacked the SNP, she attacked Labour, she blew hot air at Ruth Davidson and she hailed stunning “achievements”.

May focused on previous gains in Scotland, which is not hard when the low water mark was a solitary MP a few years ago.

May’s speech was as divorced from reality as it is possible to be. This is a politician who has elevated delusion to an art form.

Scottish independence 'biggest and boldest' Yes rally as 100,000 set to march

Where was the recognition of her absolutely central role in all this chaos?

Where was the acknowledgement the party’s gains in Scotland are being undermined by the chaos down south?

Where was the apology for putting us all through this?

Her approach to Brexit was very publicly slated by angry voters who turned to Lib Dems, Greens and independents in their droves.

Her approach to governing was brutally condemned in areas of England held at Westminster by pompous throwbacks like Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Yet the crowd in Aberdeen still lapped up her out-of-touch, fantasy version of the world. They were only too happy to hear the good word being preached from the conference stage.

Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader, will have her turn to gee up the troops today.

There is no denying her personal appeal to some Scots voters.

Davidson talks tough, she takes the fight to the SNP and she presents an alternative, softer image for Conservatism.

But that’s also the problem. Her centrist, liberal character is often entirely at odds with what the party is actually doing, or what it stands for.

She campaigned to stay in the EU, just like the majority of Scots wanted but is now helping to usher in Brexit.

Union fear £1bn Royal Navy ships order will go to Spain in shoddy Brexit deal over Gibraltar

And how is that going? Ask the voters of England.

There was no test of Tory appeal in Scottish councils this time. But the Tories don’t have long to wait until Scots go to the polls in the European Parliament election.

Davidson is also clearly uncomfortable having to answer for Tory policies such as welfare cuts, immigration crackdowns and despicable policies like the rape clause.

But she supports them all the same.

Davidson will today claim she is ready to unify Scotland and lead a vibrant country as first minister.

You’d have to be as delusional as Theresa May to believe it.
