Theresa May says local election result is a simple message to 'get on and deliver Brexit'

Prime Minister Theresa May says the local election results are a simple message for the two main political parties to 'get on and deliver Brexit'.

The Conservatives has lost more than 500 seats and 19 councils - with more counts still taking place.

Labour has also lost 60 seats and lost control in heartland councils like Burnley, Hartlepool and Bolsover.

However there has been a surge in votes for Liberal Democrats, as well as an uprising for smaller parties such as The Green Party.

Speaking at the Welsh Conservative conference in Llangollen, the Prime Minister said that the local elections were "very difficult" for the Conservative Party.

She said: "Results are still coming in, but the picture is clear.

"Councillors who've given years of hard work in their local communities have lost through no fault of their own."

Mrs May added: "This is a difficult time for our party and these election results are a symptom of that.

"We have the privilege of governing our country at a momentous time and we have a responsibility of delivering something truly historic.

"What is momentous and historic is seldom simple and straightforward.

"But I think there was a simple message from yesterday's elections to both us and the Labour Party - just get on and deliver Brexit."

In Greater Manchester the party celebrated  taking full control of Trafford council  after more than a decade trying, a nationally significant moment for both for them and the Conservatives.

But at the same time Labour  lost control of Bolton  by almost the same margin.

Meanwhile in Stockport,  Labour are now neck and neck with the Liberal Democrats , with a power struggle now set to ensue.

The Tories suffered serious losses in both Stockport and Trafford.
