Theresa May quitting creates nightmare future of hardline Brexit Tory leader

Europe has been the Tory Party nightmare from which it can never awaken and, for the last three years, it has filled the waking hours of everyone in the UK.

Now, having consumed its fourth leader in pursuit of the impossible, the idea of a splendid, nostalgic isolation from the real 21st century world, the nightmare the Tories have inflicted on Britain is about to get darker.

For all her strategic blundering, for all her lack of negotiating skill and blinkered inability to be politically flexible, for all her proven dismal attempts to dance on moving ground, Theresa May is not one of the Tories who thought that isolation trumped international co-operation.

Theresa May vows to quit as Prime Minister once Brexit is delivered

As she shuffles off-stage, the prospects increase that the next Tory leader will be an arch-Brexiteer.

Should it be Boris Johnson who emerges from the selectorate of geriatric, wealthy and out-of-touch Tory Party members as PM, they will be an international buffoon to boot.

In the Brexit process, the last two-and-half-years of pain have only been the indigestible starter section of the menu.

Eight Brexit options outlined as MPs take control of Commons agenda to hold 'indicative votes'

The negotiations over a trade deal with the EU will be another gut-wrenching selection and with a free-market buccaneer like Michael Gove, or a born again Brexiteer like Jeremy Hunt ordering our meal, the experience will be nauseous, if not poisonous, to the UK.

Brexit has been a living nightmare, a long night out with the worst disco dancer in the world, and now we face the prospect of an after-hours kebab with one of the leering contenders to be her replacement.

Pass the sick bag.
