Theresa May gets number of new bus routes in the North and Midlands wrong by 98.74%

Theresa May has got the number of new bus routes opening in the north and midlands out by a whopping 98.7% - and she's been called out on it.

The Prime Minister told MPs back in February that since 2010, there had been 10,000 new bus routes introduced in the north and the midlands since 2010.

She claimed that the government had been prioritising buses by saying that she recognised the "importance of buses to our communities".

Today both the Alex Cuningham, who asked the original question, and the former shadow transport minister Daniel Zeichner, raised the issue.

Mr Cunningham accused the PM of "inadvertently misleading" the House of Commons.

Mr Zeichner said Mrs May's assertion was "quite surprising to those of us who follow transport issues".

He said the Prime Minister had omitted to explain that a large number of routes had been cancelled.

He raised the official Department for Transport figures which he says show that: "They are that 13,279 routes have been registered and 13,153 routes have been withdrawn, which means that there are actually only 126 new routes."

On 20 February 2019 Mrs May said:  “I recognise the importance of buses to our communities. We have been spending £250 million every year to keep fares down and maintain an extensive network.

"The hon. Gentleman might like to know that since 2010 we have seen 10,000 new routes across the north and midlands, and live local bus services registered have increased by 15% in just the past two years.”

Transport minister Nusrat Ghani was forced to admit the discrepancy in a letter to Mr Zeichner.

She explained: "To calculate the net number of resignations, you would need to subtract the number of cancelled local bus service resignations from the number of new registrations."
