Theresa May makes first public appearance since teary resignation

Theresa May has made her first public appearance since she announced her resignation on Friday.

The Prime Minister - who said she will stand down as Tory leader on June 7 and PM after her party pick her successor - was at church this morning with her husband Philip.

Mrs May broke cover to attend the weekly service at St Andrews church in her Maidenhead constituency as fellow Tories were locked in the opening salvos of a brutal race to succeed her.

Vicars daughter Mrs May looked relaxed as she greeted a friendly dog, named Blitz and walked with her husband to the service.

This morning Brexiteer Michael Gove, torpedoed Boris Johnson's leadership bid in 2016, announced that he is to have another attempt at becoming prime minister.

Speaking outside his west London home Mr Gove said: "I can confirm that I will be putting my name forward to be prime minister of this country.

"I believe that I'm ready to unite the Conservative and Union Party, ready to deliver Brexit , and ready to lead this great country."

It puts him on a collision course with Boris Johnson, who is the frontrunner in the race.

The race has become a crowded field.

As of Sunday morning - alongside Boris and Mr Gove - Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Health Secretary Matt Hancock, International Development Secretary Rory Stewart  and ex-Cabinet ministers Dominic Raab, Esther McVey and Andrea Leadsom had thrown their hats into the ring.

But former minister Justine Greening has ruled herself out of the race and branded it a "beauty parade for hard Brexiteers".

Ms Greening told Sophy Ridge on Sunday that the leadership contest is a "narrow discussion in a narrow Conservative Party that's really around what version of hard Brexit to do".

She added: "This should and could be a leadership contest that was about hard choices for the Conservative Party.

"Instead it is really just going to be a beauty parade of hard Brexiteers.

"I am not going to be in it."
