Theresa May does a better job marshalling a 10k race than directing her MPs

Theresa May does a better job of marshalling runners at a 10k race than directing her MPs over Brexit .

The Prime Minister donned a yellow vest to help out at the Maidenhead Easter 10 in her Berkshire constituency today.

Fresh from her walking holiday her Snowdonia, Mrs May and husband Philip chatted and joked with runners, while the PM even signed a competitor's race badge and offered another a high-five.

The Conservative leader returns to Westminster next week amid ongoing rows with her backbenchers about her EU Withdrawal Agreement.

She has failed with three attempts at pushing the pact through the Commons after failing to persuade her troops to support the plan.

And today it emerged Tory activists are refusing to even mention her name in the campaign for next month's council elections.

Grassroots canvassers are failing to name-check the “toxic” PM as the battle for town halls hots up.

North East Cambridgeshire Conservative Association chairman Jan French told the Telegraph: "I don't talk about her at all.

“As far as we are concerned these are local elections and they are nothing to do with national politics.

“We are having a bit of a tough time on the doorsteps and we want to be talking about local things we can do and achieve."

The Conservatives are braced for a ballot box battering as angry voters switch to Nigel Farage's new Brexit Party or Remain-supporting parties.

The Tories fear Brexit-backers will desert them in droves.

Dinah Glover, chairman of the East of London area Conservatives, said: "I don't think there has ever been a time when a Conservative government has been such a negative to a campaign.

"I have never experienced the party in such uproar and despair as it is at the moment. In the main, people sense betrayal that Brexit is not being delivered.”

Ed Costelloe, chairman of Grassroots Conservatives, added: "Campaigners and candidates are only talking about what's happening at a local level, because the frustration they are hearing about what's going on at a national level is virtually universal.

"Most of the people out there canvassing have a lot of experience and they are saying this is worse than anything they have experienced before.

“A few people still admire [Mrs May's] doggedness, but pretty much no one has anything good to say about her.

“Sympathy is waning fast. She just should not be there."
