"I have never experienced the party in such uproar and despair as it is at the moment. In the main, people sense betrayal that Brexit is not being delivered.”
Ed Costelloe, chairman of Grassroots Conservatives, added: "Campaigners and candidates are only talking about what's happening at a local level, because the frustration they are hearing about what's going on at a national level is virtually universal.
"Most of the people out there canvassing have a lot of experience and they are saying this is worse than anything they have experienced before.
“A few people still admire [Mrs May's] doggedness, but pretty much no one has anything good to say about her.
“Sympathy is waning fast. She just should not be there."
