This is the moment Tory MPs in the Commons committee room erupted in applause as Sir Graham Brady revealed Theresa May’s job was safe.

The chairman of the 1922 Committee's announcement that the “parliamentary party does have confidence in Theresa May” was met with raucous cheering and desk-banging on Wednesday evening.

Tory MPs rose to their feet for a standing ovation before it was declared that the number of votes cast in Mrs May's favour was 200 to 117.

And as Sir Graham reminded MPs that under Conservative Party rules no further confidence vote can take place for at least 12 months, the room exploded with further cheers.

Following her win, the embattled Prime Minister today heads to Brussels to address EU leaders on her Brexit deal.

Mrs May was forced to face down hardline Brexiteers on Wednesday, who triggered a vote of no confidence in her leadership following backlash to her Brexit deal.

Despite keeping her job, Mrs May will travel to the Belgian capital still facing with the same dilemma before the leadership drama unfolded: how to convince the EU to tweak the Withdrawal Agreement so that it will be passed by Parliament.

Speaking in Downing Street moments after the result was announced on Wednesday night, Mrs May acknowledged a "significant" number of her MPs had voted against her and said: "I have listened to what they said."

She pledged to seek "legal and political assurances" on the Brexit backstop to allay MPs' concerns about her Withdrawal Agreement when she attends the European Council summit on Thursday.

Mrs May said she and her administration had a "renewed mission", saying: "Following this ballot, we now need to get on with the job of delivering Brexit for the British people and building a better future for this country."

She said this must involve "politicians of all sides coming together and acting in the national interest".

The Prime Minister has sowed the seeds for her eventual departure by telling Tory MPs at a meeting before the ballot that she would not lead the party into the next general election, expected in 2022.

But she still faced calls to resign from Brexit-backing MPs including Jacob Rees-Mogg, who said that she had lost the confidence of more than one-third of her MPs and a majority of backbenchers.

Mr Rees-Mogg told the Press Association that Mrs May should resign "as soon as the Queen has a moment in her diary to see her".

The hardline European Research Group (ERG), which Mr Rees-Mogg is a part of, vowed to continue opposing Mrs May's "disastrous" Brexit deal. A spokesman warned: "The parliamentary arithmetic remains unchanged."

But other Brexiteers said they would end their efforts to unseat the Tory leader.

Crispin Blunt said: "The leadership question is now behind us for a year and we must get behind Theresa May in delivering Brexit."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who had a fiery clash with Mrs May in the Commons on Wednesday, said the "dismal" Brexit deal should be put before MPs next week.
