Theresa May calls Brexit a 'great moment of national change'

Theresa May has called Brexit a "great moment of national change" and said her Government has a plan "to get us the right deal", at the start of a major speech on the UK's departure from the EU.

The Prime Minister is laying out her "12 principles" which will guide Britain's negotiating position after it triggers Article 50 at the end of March, beginning the two-year process of leaving the bloc.

Speaking from Lancaster House, Ms May said she would get the right deal "for the UK abroad, as well as for ordinary people working at home", and insisted the country was "stronger, fairer, more united and more outward looking than ever before".

"To our friends across Europe, let me say this," she said. "Our vote to leave was no rejection of the values we share. It was no attempt to harm the EU itself. We do not want to turn the clock back to when Europe was less peaceful and secure.

"It was a vote to secure our parliamentary democracy... and to become even more global in our outlook."

She said EU nationals "will still be welcome in our country... as we hope our citizens will be welcome in yours".
