Theresa May buying house in Dunmore East revealed as a 'late April Fools joke'

A report claiming that Theresa May had bought a house in Co Waterford was a late April Fools Joke, it has been revealed.

The Munster Express newspaper had written a story claiming that the British Prime Minister had bought a home in Dunmore East.

The report said that May purchased the property to serve as a holiday home for when she leaves office.

Downing Street officials strongly denied the story, which was published in the paper on Wednesday.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar says he hopes Jeremy Corbyn will come up with a 'compromised' Brexit plan with Theresa May

It claimed that the Prime Minister and her husband Philip had bought a house in the area "within easy walking distance" of Dunmore village.

However it has now been confirmed by the newspaper that the story was a belated April Fools Joke.

John O'Connor of the Munster Express told RTE radio: "There wasn't a word of truth in it. I've been causing with April Fool stories for a long long time.

"The Munster Express is out on a Tuesday, and the story clearly said that the news broke yesterday Monday. But a lot of people were caught."

But this isn't the first time the media had been hoodwinked by Mr O'Connor's story.

Back in 1982, he wrote an April Fool's story saying Prince Andrew had married a girl from Ballybricken which was eventually picked up by the English papers.

He said: "Eventually the Buckingham palace had to issues a statement saying they didn't appreciate the antics of a mischievous Irish journalist."
