Theresa May brandishes anti-Semitism advert in PMQs ambush of Jeremy Corbyn

Theresa May has brandished a newspaper advert taken out by Labour peers attacking Jeremy Corbyn's record on anti-Semitism.

In a House of Commons ambush, she accused the Labour leader of "failing to deal with racism" telling him "this is your legacy Mr Corbyn".

The Labour leader repeatedly tried to hold the PM to account on her government's record on Climate Change.

But after giving perfunctory answers, she kept pivoting back to the issue of anti-Semitism in Labour in a bid to turn the tables.

During Prime Minister's Questions, she told the House of Commons: "Before the right honourable gentleman stands up and parades himself as the champion of climate change, or the champion of the people, or the defender of equality and fairness, he needs to apologise for his failure to deal with racism in the Labour Party.

"Just today 60 distinguished members of the Labour Party have written in the newspapers the Labour Party welcomes everyone except, it seems, Jews.

"This is your legacy Mr Corbyn. You still haven't opened your eyes, you still haven't told the whole truth, you still haven't accepted your responsibility. You have failed the test of leadership, apologise now."

More than 60 Labour peers have attacked Jeremy Corbyn's "failure" to stop the spread of anti-Semitism in a .

The full-page advert in today's Guardian is addressed - accusing him of letting a "toxic culture divide our movement".

: "The Labour party welcomes everyone* irrespective of race, creed, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation. (*except, it seems, Jews). "This is your legacy Mr Corbyn."

Labour today hit back by claiming the letter contains "false and misleading claims about the Party by those hostile to Jeremy Corbyn's politics".

Mr Corbyn insisted Labour "totally opposes" racism in all its forms and hit back at the PM over Islamophobia within Conservative ranks.

He said: "This party totally opposes racism in any form whatsoever. Anti-Semitism has no place in our society, no place in any of our parties, and no place in any of our dialogue. Neither does any other form of racism.

"When 60% of Tory Party members think Islam is a threat to Western civilisation, and the Prime Minister has said she will act on Islamophobia within her own party, I hope she does, I look forward to that being dealt with as we deal with any racism that occurs within our own party as well."

Theresa May concluded her clash with Mr Corbyn by asking: "What would his great heroes of Attlee, Bevan and Benn think? Look what he's done to their party we will never let him do it to our country."

The Labour leader hit back defending his party's record on racism and instead pointing to Mrs May's own personal record including encouraging the hostile environment and sending "Go Home" vans around London.

The SNP's leader in Westminster Ian Blackford also demanded Mrs May account for the "Go Home" vans that she sent round London as Home Secretary encouraging illegal immigrants to turn themselves in.

Mr Corbyn repeatedly raised the issue of climate change from the dispatch box accusing the government of ignoring the true scale of the problem.

He said: "We're actually hiding the scale of the problem by passing the buck to other countries as well."

He promised that a government under him would take it seriously.

He said: "The climate emergency simply cannot be left to the market. Labour takes the climate crisis seriously, we got parliament to declare a climate emergency, and in office we will kick start a Green Industrial Revolution to safeguard our future and transform our economy.”
