There won't be an ice rink in Bristol's Millennium Square this Christmas

From pantomime performances to an incredible cinematic experience in a spiegeltent, there's plenty to enjoy in Bristol this Christmas.

This week it was announced that the popular Après Ski Bar will be returning to Millennium Square, which will come as good news to everyone who has visited it in the past.

The city centre attraction, named The Square, will play host to a wonderfully cosy bar perfect for enjoying some mulled wine with your friends, live DJs, delicious food, screenings on We The Curious' big screen and more.

For the first time this year there will also be an interactive and immersive light show called Submergence, which uses thousands of individual points of suspended light to 'create feelings of presence and movement within a physical space'.

While the festive pop-up boasts a host of fantastic features which all make it well worth visiting, it will be lacking one this year which will be sorely missed.

This year there will be no ice rink in Millennium Square as organisers try to reduce the carbon footprint of the event.

Instead there will be a roller disco led by Bristol favourites Bump, who are well known for putting on fun-filled pop-up rollerskating events in and around the city and at UK festivals.

Jon Ojo, Operations Manager of organisers Pure Spaces, said: "Pure Spaces are delighted to be working with We The Curious again to create Winter at the Square.

"After the success of the Bristol Beach Club and Apres bar, we're coming back bigger and better for the people of Bristol over the festive period.

"Our good friends Bump Roller Disco will be back on the square to offer a more sustainable alternative to the ice rink of previous years. We have lots of great surprises in store and can't wait to get going."

Lydia Ladbrooke, head of operations for We The Curious said: “Since the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] report [in 2018] we have our been reviewing all our activity, and by making changes we are on track to meet our commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

"After reviewing the energy consumption of running an ice rink, we took the decision to remove it going forward, but we are keen to continue to create a positive fun seasonal offer for our city.

"So we’re really excited to be welcoming back the Pure Spaces and BUMP teams to Millennium Square this winter; it’ll provide a really fun, festive and exciting destination for the holiday period. It was great having the BUMP team on site over the summer, so we’re confident that any would-be ice skaters will be happy with a roller skating alternative.

"We can’t achieve all of our aims in one go, so it’s a step-by-step process that we need to work on with our partners, but by evolving the activities and replacing the ice rink with a more energy-efficient alternative, we’re heading in the right direction.”
