'There will be a big hole in our family' - Mum's tribute to son who died in Edinburgh climbing accident

The mum of the climber who tragically died after falling from Salisbury Crags in a climbing accident has paid a heartbreaking tribute to her "shining" and "enthusiastic" "boy".

Murray Mckenzie, 22, died after plunging 50ft from the rock face near Arthur's Seat when his camming device failed to support his body weight on Sunday July 14.

A friend who had been climbing with him raised the alarm at around 10pm, triggering a joint emergency response from ambulance, mountain rescue and fire crews

However despite efforts by paramedics to save his life, the 22-year-old died at the scene.

Now his mum, Janet Jones, has shared a moving tribute to her son on Facebook .

She said: "I write with a mother’s broken heart that on Sunday 14th of July I lost my son Murray Mckenzie. He was a shining boy, enthusiastic, a comedian. When you met him, you knew you had met him.

Janet Jones shared this moving tribute on Facebook to her 'shining boy' (Facebook)

"There will be a big hole in our family for the rest of our lives. However, he died doing something he loved. People in Scotland may have seen in the news that there was a climbing accident at Arthur’s seat. That was my boy.

"Tonight, there is a vigil at Arthur’s Seat. Over 50 friends of my son’s will be getting together, sending up balloons and Chinese lanterns. There will be a minute silence at 9.15pm, the time he fell.

"If you can join in, please do. Maybe light a candle. I am heartbroken and very proud. He lived such a short life but what a send off. My beautiful boy. Words can’t possibly explain this experience."

A crowdfunder has also been set up to help Murray's family with funeral costs - more than £2,000 since it was set up, just days ago.
