'There was a woman who hoovered her mum's ashes': Alan Robson on Night Owls' weirdest calls

"The North East is known for its mad sense of humour," says Alan Robson.

And he would know better than anyone.

On Thursday, the North East radio legend hosted the final broadcast of Night Owls on Metro Radio.

For more than 40 years Alan has presided over bizarre callers, quizzes, pranks, stories of UFOs, vampires, mythical creatures and hauntings.

And as he prepared for the final show before moving to Greatest Hits Radio, we asked him what the strangest call he'd ever had was.

"Well, there was the man who put the daisy down his penis," he said almost straight away.

"This young man decided to welcome his girlfriend home by putting a daisy down his penis, but he didn't realise they don't have soft stems when they grow back a lot, so he couldn't pull it out.

"He went to hospital and had to have it cut down the centre.

"The fact that someone would tell you that is amazing."

But he added: "Every night you will get a story that will just leave your chin on your chest.

"There was a woman who spilled her mum's ashes on the bottom of the wardrobe so she hoovered her up, and the rest of her mother was in the hoover bag.

"The North East is known for its mad sense of humour."

But there have been dark times too, as he recalls, "I've had death threats from the IRA and they came for me - that was seven days of terror. Memorable but terrifying."

The late-night phone-in programme, which has been hosted by the popular Newcastle presenter for more than 40 years, was aired for the last time on Metro Radio and TFM on Thursday night.

Alan will be moving over to Metro's sister station Greatest Hits Radio North East for a weekly 'Sunday super show' later in the summer.
