"There's nothing I can do about it, I'm not a groundsman" - Ireland v Samoa pitch sparks brilliant reaction from referee

It's no secret that the Rugby World Cup clash between Ireland and Samoa was played on a fairly poor pitch.

Footage before the match showed Ireland players able to bury the ball under the turf, while many on social media called it out for its somewhat patchy composition.

One social media user compared it to a "patchwork quilt", while another said that simply looking at the pitch made his "reconstructed ACL throb in sympathy".

The reaction was overwhelmingly negative.

Even the players were bemused by the standard of the playing surface - with the turf visibly being torn up and shifted about by scrums and rucks.

And Samoa captain Jack Lam's frustration led to a response from referee Nic Berry that summed up everyone's feelings over the pitch in Fukuoka.

"There's nothing I can do about it, I'm not a groundsman," said the official after Lam complained to him.

Quite.
