'There's no point' - Virgil van Dijk delivers title message after surprise Liverpool loss to Leicester

Virgil van Dijk is confident the Premier League title race is far from over despite Liverpool's disappointing 1-0 defeat to Leicester City yesterday evening.

Jurgen Klopp's side were unable to breach what was a makeshift Foxes defence and paid the price for Mohamed Salah's missed penalty during the first half.

Ademola Lookman's strike after half-time condemned the Reds to only a second loss of the season, presenting Manchester City with a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Having gone toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola's side for the Premier League crown in two of the last three campaigns, however, Liverpool will be all too aware there is little margin for error when competing for glory with the Citizens.

But Van Dijk has not given up hope of securing top spot despite Tuesday's unlikely setback, with Klopp's side now at the halfway stage of the season.

"What can we say? We’re in December. The season is so, so long. Anything can happen," admitted the Dutch defender.

"You have seen it with Covid and injuries – lots of things can change. There’s no point looking at [Manchester City] or Chelsea or the other teams around us."

Tuesday's fixture against the Foxes saw Van Dijk back in the starting-eleven after missing three matches following a positive Covid-19 result.

The 30-year-old would certainly have been hoping to help secure three points on his return to first-team action, but conceded that the hosts were worthy winners on the night.

"I think they [Leicester] deserved the win but that was obviously also down to us. I think we were poor in the last third," he told Amazon Prime after the full-time whistle.

"A lot of crosses they defended well. Overall, it was not a good performance. They [Leicester] didn’t create much but looked dangerous on the break, which they are good at.

"Credit to them. We have to look at ourselves and improve, which we will do. It’s part of football.

"We will keep trying until the very end. We created good chances but unfortunately today wasn’t the day it went in the back of the net. We had a penalty miss, which happens. But it’s disappointing."
