'There's movement' - Jan Vertonghen offers update on his long-term future to Belgian media

Jan Vertonghen says 'there is enough movement' when talking about his future after his current Tottenham Hotspur contract ends.

The 33-year-old Belgium international signed a short-term extension to his expiring contract in order to be available for Spurs until the end of this season.

He has yet to be used by Jose Mourinho since the Premier League returned but will likely get game time as the games come thick and fast every three days after next week.

Mourinho plays down suggestions of rift with Ndombele

Vertonghen's contract will end next month when the season comes to a close and sides such as Roma have been linked with bringing him in on a free transfer.

He admitted in an interview this week with Belgian media outlet Sporza that things were happening on the contract front.

"I can't say much now, but there is enough movement. Only most teams wait until the current competitions are finished and they are sure of their TV money," he said.

"The transfer from Timo Werner to Chelsea already proves that there is still enough money in the market.

"Once the ball starts rolling, it will be all right."

Vertonghen admitted that he was disappointed that Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars made it clear publicly that the Spurs man would not be returning to his former club, when he felt it was never an option.

"That is not a disappointment, because it has been clear for a long time," he said.

"Only it is only now in the media. I am shocked that it is said so explicitly."

"Ajax will always be special to me, but actually it was never an issue.

"I already said that I did not want to compete with my good friend Daley Blind. He is doing very well there."
