There's going to be an independent review into what is causing flooding in Stockport

An independent review is to take place into the flooding that left homes and businesses in Stockport under water.

Stockport council has announced that it is commissioning an independent probe into the events that led to parts of the borough being flooded in late July and early august.

A number of properties were damaged after more than a month's rainfall fell in 24 hours.

Some of the worst affected areas included Bramhall, Cheadle, Woodley, Bredbury and Romiley.

The council has also announced that new water pumps have been installed on the A555, which closed after being deluged with water.

They were due to be installed the week the flooding occurred. Work is ongoing to remove silt from the tank system.

The flooding review will asses how and why it took place and what measures should be put in place to mitigate against any future recurrences.

It will also investigate what led to parts of the borough - a number of which were also affected this year - flooding in 2016, and the subsequent action taken.

The council says it has undertaken an initial review of council infrastructure, such as bridges and retaining walls, and has not identified any immediate concerns.

A more detailed inspection programme is now ongoing.

It has also reviewed the impact of the floods on local culverts and says it has started the process of clearing their trash screens on a priority basis.

The council says it has also identified a number of damaged footpaths, which have been made safe or cordoned off while it develops a 'prioritised repair programme'.

All gullies are also expected to have been inspected by the end of August, while most of the streets that were flooded have been swept.

Anyone who wishes to provide information that should be considered by the review is asked to send it to flood@stockport.gov.uk
