'There’s been interest' - Adrian makes Spain return claim after signing new Liverpool contract

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has revealed he had offers from Spain before electing to renew his deal at Anfield.

Adrian joined Liverpool on a free transfer in August 2019 and has made 24 appearances in all competitions during his time on Merseyside, including penalty shootout heroics during the UEFA Super League final in 2019.

However, his time at Anfield looked to be coming to an end with his contract set to expire at the end of this month.

But Liverpool confirmed on Monday that the former West Ham goalkeeper had agreed to extend his deal with the club.

And now speaking in the aftermath of agreeing to extend his Reds contract, the 34-year-old revealed he had offers to return to Spain this summer.

“We will stay here for a couple of more seasons for the moment,” he told Canal Sur Radio’s El Pelotazo show via Sport Witness.

“It’s a very beneficial agreement, I’m happy; it’s shown the level at which the club is. And although last year was not what we expected, we have been as high as possible.

“It was time to make a decision, and with what was on the table, I decided to continue at Liverpool.

“There has been interest from several Spanish clubs, but it’s something that stays there.

“I would like to go home after so many years away, I’ve been in the Premier League for eight seasons, but I’m 34 years old, I’m very well physically, and I’ll keep it that way.”

The ECHO understands Liverpool currently have no plans to loan out young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who replaced Adrian as Alisson Becker's back-up last season.

While 19-year-old goalkeeper Liam Hughes also recently signed a new contract with the club after being named on the first-team bench last season.
