There’s more chaos on the rails this morning — but not for the reason you might think.
Services are disrupted in the West Country this morning, after one train hit a shopping trolley just before 7am on December 22. It’s having a huge knock-on effect on the rail network in Wiltshire.
That’s according to National Rail, who share more details of the incident on social media this morning. The disruption is expected to clear before 8:30am, it says.

“A train has hit a supermarket trolley in the Trowbridge area which is causing disruption to journeys between Westbury and Bath Spa / Swindon,” the tweet said. “As a result, trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.”
Nationally, it’s a difficult time for rail passengers, due to ongoing strike action and reduced services from operators. Yesterday, TransPennine Express issued a ‘do not travel’ warning, despite not seeing any staff taking industrial action.
Thursday (December 22) is also not a strike day, but Friday is for East Midlands Railway staff only. There will be more action over the Christmas weekend, this time hitting engineering works, before more walkouts by RMT members in January.
