There's 'absolutely no way' Holy Communions and Confirmations will happen in May or June, Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin says

The Archbishop of Dublin has insisted that there’s 'absolutely no way' First Holy Communions and Confirmations will be happening in the capital before July because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Diarmaid Martin, the country’s senior clergyman, said that a time frame for the sacraments normally received by primary school children between March and May will only be drawn up after schools have fully reopened and large gatherings are allowed.

He added that that will not be the case "for some months ahead".

The archbishop said he realised the lack of certainty surrounding dates presented difficulties for pupils and their families, and advised parishes to find ways to stay in contact with “candidates for the sacraments”.

Parents of schoolchildren awaiting their First Holy Communion - which for most was to take place next month - received an email on Friday which took extracts from a letter sent to principals and the chairpersons of primary school boards of management from the Archbishop’s House.

It reads: "A number of schools and parishes have been in contact asking about Confirmation and First Holy Communion ceremonies.

"We can only begin to speak of a time frame for these Sacraments, when it is possible once again to hold large gatherings of people, especially children.

"This is unlikely for some months ahead, and therefore, it will not be possible to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation and First Holy Communion as planned during the summer months of May and June 2020.

"I appreciate that this is a very difficult time for the pupils and their families, but we must follow the advice and guidelines from the Government and the HSE in the interest of health and safety of all."

Archbishop Martin is quoted in the Irish Times saying: "I will be in contact with the priests, parish teams and schools at a later date when there is further clarity around the situation."
