There's a viral trick to curl your hair with socks - but does it work?

We all know heat styling is damaging to our hair, but that doesn't normally stop us from going at it with straighteners and hairdryers and curling tongs.

But for the time being, none of us can go running to our hairdressers for conditioning treatments and trims, so we all need to take as much care of our tresses as possible.

Most of us are also stuck at home, so there doesn't seem to be much point in creating beautiful hairstyles when the only person who'll see it is your cat.

There's been a viral trend circulating on the internet in recent weeks though that promises to give you beautiful curls without the need for any heat.

It's a super easy trick that claims to leave you with perfect curls - but you will have to look a little silly in the process.

The technique involves wrapping pieces of hair around socks, ideally leaving them in overnight so that the hair sets in perfect curls.

You can also do it using the tie of a dressing gown, which is a bit less fiddly and has largely the same end result.

We gave it a go to see how it works.

The result the next morning (Manchester Evening News)

Section your hair into four (you might want to use extra socks/scarves if your hair is very thick), then take one of your front sections and wrap it around the sock, away from your face.

Then take the back section and wrap it in the opposite direction, before tying the ends with a hair bobble.

It's a little fiddly but you don't need to worry about being too neat or precise.

It works best on slightly damp hair, and ideally you'll want to leave it in overnight.

Take care if you are using a dressing gown tie, as they can get tangled around you in your sleep.

Then in the morning, gently pull your socks out of your hair, comb or brush through, and set with hairspray - job done!

Our curls lasted most of the day, and that was on fine, stubbornly straight hair.
