There's a revolting smell in Droylsden and Audenshaw and it's making people feel sick

People living in Droylsden and Audenshaw have been reporting a 'vile' smell in the air tonight.

Social media is flooded with posts from people trying to work out where the pungent aroma is coming from.

Residents as far away as Ashton and Gorton have also reported an unpleasant odour outside their homes.

Some people were blaming their pets - or their partners - for the stench, before realising it was coming from outside.

A number of theories have been suggested as to what might be causing the smell - from farms to sewage works.

One person wrote: "It's awful, the smell was worse this afternoon in Audenshaw I thought it was the dog but then it didn't go away."

While another said: "Bad in Audenshaw now. Thought one of us had walked in dog poo...it's rotten."

It's by far not the first time people in Greater Manchester have found themselves being subjected to an unpleasant odour.

In the past, water treatment plants, stagnant water underneath buildings and burst sewage pipes have all ended up being the source of some pretty revolting smells.

As yet, the source of the latest stench has yet to be confirmed.
