There's a new cheapest supermarket in our weekly comparison as meat prices DROP

There's a new cheapest supermarket in our weekly price comparison of everyday essentials - with price drops on meat largely the reason. This week we've seen almost all of the six main supermarkets level out to the same price for a pack of minced beef at £1.69.

And, dropping the beef price has seen a new supermarket surge to become the cheapest shopping basket this week. Lidl claims that title with a basket dropping back below the £10 mark for the first time in weeks - checking out at £9.97.

We have been highlighting price rises and falls in our weekly comparison of basics like milk, butter and bread, keeping track of the costs of the same eight products at the six main supermarkets - Tesco, Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Sainsbury's and Morrisons.

In last week's comparison Tesco and Asda were the cheapest - while overall bills were rising yet again at Morrisons. We've been keeping track since March and watched as prices have steadily been rising to the point where shoppers have been saying: "They're really taking the mick now," about the supermarket increases.

But, after last week's jump, prices have stayed steady this week with NO rises - although Morrisons remains the overall most expensive of the supermarkets, with the basket costing you £12 - over £2 more than the cheapest deals at Lidl.

The only changes in the baskets this week have been at Lidl and Sainsburys who have both dropped the price of minced beef to £1.69 - price matching with Aldi, Asda and Tesco. Morrisons has kept its minced beef locked at £2.19, 50p more than its competitors.

The only slight difference in sizes is with the baked beans, which range from 400g in Sainsbury's and 410g in Asda and Morrisons, to the standard 420g in Aldi, Lidl and Tesco. Where Asda's pack of chicken is larger, we've worked out the equivalent price for a fairer comparison.

Morrisons has been keen to point out the number of money-saving initiatives it is running at the moment, including the 'kids eat free' offer, which runs daily in all its cafes, with every adult meal £4.99 and over.

If used alongside its 'Daily Special' meal of the day for £4.99 - weekdays from 3pm - it means a family of four can eat for £9.98. Morrisons also unveiled 'a new and improved' My Morrisons app earlier this month, offering a loyalty programme which 'makes it easier for customers to save money'. It's a cash-reward system, rather than points-based, so it 'means customers no longer need to save up their points or wait for vouchers'.
