There's a free talk on how 'Govanhill defeated Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts' being held in Glasgow

A free lecture which discusses how is to be held in Glasgow.

Emeritus Professor Henry Maitles, who told the story of left-wing Jewish protesters and how they challenged fascists in the city in the 1930s, will be talking about his work at John Smith House on West Regent Street on Thursday, October 31 next week.

The University for the West of Scotland historian specialises in anti-Semitism and Holocaust Education in Scotland.

The event, hosted by Stand Up to Racism, will "shine a light on a little-known piece of Glasgow's history, as Jewish, youth and workers’ organisations allied to mobilise opposition to stop the fascists from marching on our streets."

Organisers add: "Hear how grassroots campaigning challenged the BUF across Scotland to ensure it was not able to grow. As fascism and racism are on the rise again, this is a crucial lesson for today."

The  Jewish protesters, aged in their twenties at the time, were part of a variety of politically active groups such as the Labour Party and the Glasgow Jewish Workers Circle.

Many later joined dozens across Scotland as volunteers in the International Brigades to fight in Spain's brutal civil war in the late 1930s.
