There’s a double standard in Britain’s response to UNRWA allegations

The double standards of the British and other Israel-backing governments are breathtaking. They immediately suspend relations with the UN Relief and Works Agency because the Israelis allege that a small number of its staff were involved in the 7 October atrocities. By contrast, they stepped up military aid to Israel after overwhelming evidence that Israel has bombed hospitals and schools, and has killed many thousands, including children, journalists and diligent aid workers. Both evils should be treated equally. The government and the Labour leadership backing it should be ashamed.

• Thank you, Malcolm Jack, for your interviews with Søren Sveistrup and Sofie Gråbøl as a reminder of that wonderful series (‘The jumper made me a fashion icon’: how we made The Killing – by Sofie Gråbøl and Søren Sveistrup, 22 January). It also brings to mind an unforgettable Guardian TV page description that still brings a smile: “More compound fricatives and troubled knitwear from Inspæctor Mørse”. Sheer genius.

• A law declaring Rwanda safe even when it isn’t sets an exciting precedent. When can we expect laws declaring Liz Truss competent, Rishi Sunak tall, Theresa May inspiring, David Cameron a man of the people and Boris Johnson honest? Well, maybe not the last…

• Re your editorial on private wealth and public austerity (24 January), Shakespeare said it best in King Lear: “So distribution should undo excess / And each man have enough.”
