There's a 'but' as Mark Lawrenson predicts Leicester City vs Newcastle United clash

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes Newcastle United will fall to defeat against Leicester City despite picking up their first league win of the season last week.

The Magpies secured their first victory against Burnley, which also marked Eddie Howe's first three-point haul since arriving as head coach.

However, in his BBC predictions column, Lawrenson has backed Leicester to emerge victorious by a 2-1 score line when the two sides meet.

He said: "Like Tottenham, Leicester have had a number of positive Covid-19 tests in their squad. We might find out a bit more about who is affected nearer kick-off.

"If, for example, Jamie Vardy, James Maddison and Harvey Barnes can play then I would still fancy Leicester. Again, I would go for a different outcome if the Foxes are without several of their best players.

"Newcastle will be on a high after finally getting their first win of the season last week but they rode their luck against Burnley and they still have big problems at the back. If Leicester are anywhere near full strength, they will find a way through."

Howe's men will face a Leicester side that were in action as recently as Thursday, when they were dumped out of the Europa League by Italian side Napoli.

The trio of Vardy, Maddison and Barnes did all feature in that game but could not prevent Leicester being knocked out of the competition.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers did not have a full squad at his disposal on Thursday but many will still consider his side favourites to see off Newcastle considering they occupy 12th place in the Premier League.

The Magpies sit 19th in the division and are level on points with both 18th-placed Burnley and 20th-placed Norwich City.

The two sides will meet in front of the Sky Sports cameras at 2pm on Sunday 12 December, at which time Newcastle's relegation battle rivals Burnley will be hosting West Ham United.
