Sometimes, memes just happen. And that’s kind of where we are with the lead up to Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Because if it isn’t this battle, it’ll be the one right after this one.
All of the sudden on social media, a series of memes started to pop up about the movie. The idea is simple: You just make a joke about the title. That’s basically it. They’re all some variation of “there’s another battle right after this one, isn’t there?” Or your classic “they won’t know there’s another battle after this.” But it was kind of hilarious how suddenly these memes consumed the timeline.
Maybe it was just mine (I have seen the film so I was looking for other opinions on it) but it is funny to me that suddenly a bunch of images with words written on them were somehow dominated my timeline. Now, I don’t really know how algorithms work but I didn’t think liking one image of a One Battle After Another meme would mean that’s all I saw. So I’m going to assume that a lot of people started making the same joke.
Often, when it comes to jokes about movies, we have variation. That isn’t always the best thing but we have a little more fun with them. What I love about the One Battle After Another jokes is that they really are the same format.
It’s so easy to do and know that I will love and probably retweet each of them. Why? Because we’re all just talking about a PTA movie and I think that’s kind of neat.
Like I said, some people are not even including any words in the actual tweet. They just post an image and I will somehow find it.
Movie memes are, in a lot of ways, the best because they are unifying. We all can partake in them and if that means that I get to laugh about the simplest internet joke then so be it.
