'There must be a plan' - Former Red Don Hutchison's verdict on Liverpool's summer window and transfer strategy

Liverpool made just one addition to their squad this summer with the signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

Despite tenuous links throughout the window, fans were left frustrated on deadline day as no further signings followed the 22-year-old.

Along with outgoings, the club instead focused on player retention and tied a number of key players down to fresh, long-term contracts.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Jordan Henderson all penned new deals this summer.

Among supporters, there has been an aura of frustration with no attacker signed and the club opted against replacing the departed Georginio Wijnaldum.

Former Liverpool and Everton midfielder Don Hutchison has spoken about the Reds' summer business and insists the club must 'have a strategy'.

He told LFC TV : “Surely Liverpool have got a plan because when Jurgen Klopp, the sporting director and the guys on the board are all talking and seeing all these Galacticos and amazing players going elsewhere and everyone is being strengthened, [Cristiano] Ronaldo pops up with Manchester United, unbelievable signing that is going to be.

"There must be a plan that we are not aware of, looking from the outside in because there has to be a strategy.

“They cannot keep going with just signing all the boys that are there, who are brilliant, on new contracts.

“There is a saying in football, if you are standing still, you are going backwards because everyone else is going forward.

“And I understand that you cannot replace [Mohamed] Salah, because it will cost you £100m, and [Sadio] Mane and [Roberto] Firmino and [Diogo] Jota and all the guys that are brilliant.

“But at some point, you would like to think there is going to be a strategy where they have got their eyes on, I don't know, Harry Kane.

"They have got their eyes on Mbappe or they have got their eyes on someone, it has to be….Haaland, there has to be a plan.”

Liverpool have started the season well, despite the lack of business, with seven points collected out of a possible nine.

Wins over Norwich City and Burnley, as well as a draw against Chelsea, have set the Reds up for what could be a dramatic title challenge.
