Former Premier League winner Joe Cole believes there is a 'base' for Newcastle 'to grow' because of the job Steve Bruce has done so far.
Bruce has guided Newcastle to 16 points from 14 games and the Magpies' 2-2 draw with reigning Premier League champions ensured they remain four points clear of the relegation zone.
Premier League survival will always be the original aim for clubs outside of the traditional top six or seven teams but Cole, who won the Premier League with Chelsea, believes Newcastle have the potential under Bruce to strive for more.
"The intensity they play at at, the front three - we were looking at Joelinton's movement in the first half and we get a great view from up here, he put in such a shift," the former England international told BT Sport.
"He hasn't finished lots of games and I am not surprised. Steve has got them so well organised and he deserves a lot of credit. The back five will say that the midfielders and front three have helped them out a great deal because there is a lot of work that goes in.
"Almiron doesn't stop moving, he is like perpetual motion. They are a good unit and I think Steve and his staff deserve a big amount of credit because he has a real organised team.
"There is a base for this club to grow and it was nice to see the fans get behind Steve and the team a little bit. Traditionally, this is what this place was all about. The fans, the supporters, it is a great place, great city and I think Steve is the man who can bring that all back."
