There could be more 'torrential' rain set to hit Manchester after a weekend of flooding

Forecasters say Manchester could be hit with more torrential rain over the next few days, after a weekend of flooding.

The Met Office is predicting that the region will experience 'frequent and thundery' showers on Tuesday, with 'thundery downpours' on Wednesday.

Earlier today, it issued new weather warnings for thunderstorms.

It comes after a weekend of heavy rain saw parts of the region left underwater as rivers and canals struggled to cope with the deluge.

The Met Office warning begins from 3am tomorrow and continues throughout the day on Wednesday.

Tuesday's warning applies to most of the western UK, from as far south as Cornwall to Cumbria in the north, while on Wednesday, which is expected to bring thundery downpours, the warning applies to most of England.

The Met Office says there is a 'small' chance that homes and business could be flooded. It says the warning means:

-There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

-There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

-Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

-Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

-There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

On Monday, homeowners, businesses and local authorities across Greater Manchester began the big clean-up after Sunday's floods.

Almost half a month's worth of rain fell across the region over 24 hours leaving dozens of homes and workplaces underwater.

At the height of the storm there were 11 flood alerts in place on Sunday with homes in Didsbury, Rochdale and Poyton said to be at 'immediate risk' of flooding.
