There could be a general election called within days as Labour signal backing

Labour would agree to a general election if the EU approved an extension , Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon has said.

Once a "no deal is off the table" Mr Burgon said Labour would back a general election, adding that a second referendum was only achievable by electing Labour into office with a majority.

He told the BBC : "I think that is fantasy politics to be fair because a public vote cannot occur under the current arithmetic of Parliament.

"Boris Johnson is not going to preside for nine months over the preparations for a public vote, as far as I can see.

"For those who want a public vote, the way to do it is to get a general election and a Labour government with a majority that will hold that vote."

This means Britain could be headed to the polls before Christmas, reports Mirror Online.

On BBC Radio 4’s Today programme , he continued: "Labour’s position is that as soon as no-deal is off the table we want a general election to get the Tories out as soon as possible.

"We are not in the business of leaving the Conservatives in power. They’ve been in power for nine years we want to get them out as soon as possible."

He said he thought the Withdrawal Agreement would take "a couple of weeks" to debate, not months.

"I don't think three months will be required to discuss the Bill.

"I would have thought it can be done in a matter of weeks, but it's not for me to decide.

"The reality is, what was put forward was completely insufficient."

The Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said that the government would call a poll "if that's the only way of resolving this Brexit deadlock, then yes, bring it on".

Last night a No. 10 source said the government would call an election.

They said: "Parliament and Corbyn have repeatedly voted for delay.

"On Saturday Parliament asked for a delay until January and today Parliament blew its last chance.

"If Parliament’s delay is agreed by Brussels, then the only way the country can move on is with an election.

"This Parliament is broken. The public will have to choose whether they want to get Brexit done with Boris or whether they want to spend 2020 having two referendums on Brexit and Scotland with Corbyn."

It comes as Britain faces fresh chaos as the Prime Minister was forced to abandon his "do or die" October 31 deadline vow and ask the EU for a further delay to the UK's departure.
