There are organised trips to Chernobyl for fans of TV show who want to know more

It's been over 30 years since the worst nuclear disaster ever hit the Chernobyl power plant.

The catastrophe is back in the headlines thanks to the hit HBO TV series which has quickly become one of the best rated shows ever.

Because of Russian secrecy, the true impact of the disaster is still unknown with the total number of deaths still a matter of debate, reports the MEN.

During the weeks following the 1986 reactor explosion and resulting fire, 134 servicemen were hospitalized with acute radiation syndrome (ARS).

Of those 134, 28 firemen and employees died within months with another 14 radiation-induced cancer deaths within the next 10 years.

But while there is a rough agreement that around 50 people died from the blast or from ARS, there are estimates that 4,000-93,000 have died due to the disaster's long-term impacts.

To this day the area is still uninhabitable for humans - although it has become something of a wildlife haven.

However, while an exclusion zone remains in place 19 miles around the power plant, people are able to venture inside as part of organised, and official, tours.

Prices vary as do the lengths of the tours, and if flights and accommodation are included.

The type of tours they have on offer are one-day tours, group two-day tours and more. Prices start from $99.
