A woman on TikTok has been documenting her encounters with a threatening neighbor who she claims did not take kindly to being rejected. He says that he only wants to be her friend and yet his angry demeanour when told no has left the woman feeling frightened for her life within her own apartment.
Footage of stalkers and creeps often find their way to TikTok, many will record or document situations where they don’t feel safe as a way of gathering evidence should something happen. A recent series of videos documenting the alleged harassment has been posted by the account “@dmckkk” with the first video receiving almost 7 million views at the time of writing. The video shows a man standing in a doorway, shouting at the individual behind the camera. The caption gives a warning to people in Kelowna, Canada.
“PSA: Kelowna girlies…” the captions reads, “Watch out for this person. His name is Mike. I said hi to him exactly once and now this happens every time I bump into him in my apartment building.” In the video Mike can be heard saying “I wanted to be your friend,” he stands blocking the door until another resident comes along, at which point Mike moves, although he can be heard calling the woman “rude” as he departs.
TikTok comes to the rescue
While the man is expressing some very concerning behavior in the video it seems the woman’s concerns were being all but ignored by both the police and the building management. Viewers on TikTok warned the original poster to be wary, and drew comparisons to a recent docuseries. One viewer wrote, “I just watched, Staking Samantha: 13 years of Terror, he reminds me of Christopher Thomas. please be safe.” Many felt the same, claiming that Mike gave off similar vibes to the stalker from the show.
Unfortunately it seems as though the woman’s complaints were not being taken seriously. In another video she explains that when the cops were called Mike didn’t answer and the police quickly left without even giving her a file number. The next day she claims the police failed to follow-up with Mike. This kind of response is exactly why statistics show less than a third of stalking cases get reported to the police.
Eventually another officer was able to come out and speak with Mike who admitted he was intoxicated at the time of the video. The woman was also able to show the video to the building manager which could possibly result in eviction, but it could take time, meanwhile Mike is free to roam the building while the woman claims she is afraid to leave her own home.
While efforts to solve the Mike problem are going slowly, the woman credits the support and advice she’s received on TikTok for helping her to persevere. She also speculates that the situation is only being taken seriously due to it going viral. Either way, it seems TikTok isn’t all cat videos and brainrot, sometimes it can be used for good.
