There are delays on the Metrolink tonight because so many staff are off work due to covid

There are delays on the Metrolink tonight due to staff shortages caused by coronavirus.

Most lines are facing disruption with passengers being advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Tram tickets are also being accepted on some bus routes, Transport for Greater Manchester said.

Earlier the Metrolink website was showing severe delays on the Ashton, Eccles and Manchester Airport lines, while there were also minor delays on the East Didsbury, Rochdale and Oldham and Trafford Park lines.

A statement on the Metrolink website said: "Due to staff shortages as a result of COVID we are currently experiencing delays across a number of our services.

"If you are planning on catching a service this evening please allow plenty of extra time for your journey."

By 9.40pm the Metrolink website was showing there were minor delays on the Ashton, Eccles and Manchester Airport lines.

Metrolink tweeted: "We are currently experiencing delays across a number of lines due to staff shortages as a result of COVID.

"You can use your Metrolink tickets on the following bus services: 11, 19, 23, 42, 101, 102, 103, 216, 217, 33, & 50."
