MARK Hughes was not sure how the Beanies for Brain Cancer campaign would go this year.

But despite the setbacks and hurdles, so far the Mark Hughes Foundation has still managed to raise $2.55 million this month.

"The response from the Newcastle and Hunter area has been just amazing," Mr Hughes said.

"These are certainly uncertain times. We weren't sure how everything was going to go, but people have just found a way to get a beanie.

"We are very grateful that we have been able to raise this much money in such tough times.

"There are beanies everywhere, and we are very grateful for that."

Mr Hughes said they had raised $2.55 million since the beanie campaign kicked off on June 1.

"We did have a huge increase across the NRL Beanie Round on the weekend," he said.

Last year, the campaign raised $3.5 million.

"Over the weekend, every time I looked at the TV there was something about our beanies, and when you drive around and you are seeing beanies everywhere, you feel the support, you feel that there is really serious hope out there for brain cancer," Mr Hughes said.

"I can't thank everyone who bought a beanie enough for giving us the funds to be able to do this research to help us find the answers."

Mr Hughes said it was not all over yet - they still have some beanies for sale, particularly kid's beanies. Buy them at markhughesfoundation.com.au.
