Theo Epstein helped MLB initiate a drive to donate more than $1M to 5 organizations that support Black Lives Matter

Theo Epstein's mission to enhance diversity expands beyond his commitment to the Chicago Cubs.

Epstein is playing an active role in Major League Baseball's initiative to donate more than $1 million to groups supporting Black Lives Matter, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Color of Change, Campaign Zero and the Jackie Robinson Foundation.

MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds said Epstein, according to Chicago White Sox Executive Vice President Ken Williams, initiated the efforts.

"(Williams) said Theo is driving the boat on this," Reynolds said Wednesday. "He doesn't take a lot of credit for it, but Theo, you ought to be commended."

Epstein, Williams and White Sox general manager Rick Hahn were among the executives from each of the 30 major-league teams to hold up a sign that read: "Black Lives Matter. United for Change."

During a conference call Monday, Epstein said he was guilty of hiring staff members with backgrounds similar to his, and added Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts and Crane Kenney, the President of Business Operations, are in the process of forming a diversity committee.

"Protocols are nice, but results are better," Epstein said.
