'Then it ends' - Manager discusses future of in-demand Nottingham Forest-linked striker

NAC Breda boss Maurice Steijn has been speaking about the future of reported Nottingham Forest target Sydney van Hooijdonk.

The son of controversial striker Pierre van Hooijdonk is said to have attracted the interest of the Reds, along with Championship rivals Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday, and Eredivisie side FC Emmen, thanks to his red-hot form this season.

However, he has been in and out of the side, as Steijn has rotated his options.

GARIBALDI RED: How do we rate Nottingham Forest's 2020 out of 10?

That has led to the Breda manager regular fielding questions about the forward and what could happen when the January transfer window opens.

In a translated interview, he told Dutch media outlet AD: “It can’t be the case that all the players who don't play knock on my door and then want to leave?

“That's the story of Syd. Both in September and recently, ‘I want to play and otherwise I want to leave’.

"That is not always possible. I have chosen a different type of striker and I have always said that Sydney is in my plans, because then we have two other strikers.”

It has been reported the 20-year-old has a clause in his contract which would allow him to leave on a free transfer next month.

Steijn says discussions over an extension have been happening “for a long time”, with an improved financial offer having been made.

But he explains, “you need two parties” to reach an agreement.

He added: “I hope he stays, that's what I called from the beginning.

“If he thinks he's getting too few minutes and keeps saying he wants to leave, then he should go too. Yes, then it ends. I would regret that, I have repeated that so often. Also to him.”
