Then and now: Pictures show how the city centre has changed since the IRA bomb

These pictures show just how much Manchester city centre has changed since the IRA bomb went off 23 years ago.

The comparison comes after the fire service released dozens of previously-unseen pictures of the destruction caused by the bomb on June 15 1996.

Using images taken from the same spot you can see just how much redevelopment has gone on around the Arndale Centre.

The pictures give an indication of the full scale of the work including the replacement of the bridge which ran over Corporation Street and the reconstruction of Marks and Spencer and the Arndale Centre itself.

The 69 previously unseen images were taken by either Greater Manchester Fire Service officers or official fire service photographers on the day of the atrocity and in the days following the blast.

Back in 1996, Manchester and the country was gripped by football fever as England hosted the Euro '96 tournament.

The bomb was the biggest ever to explode on mainland Britain.

The 3,000lb device had been hidden in a lorry parked on Corporation Street, just outside Marks & Spencer and the Arndale shopping centre.

A total of 212 people were injured but miraculously no-one was killed.

The bomb detonated at 11.20am and left the city centre devastated.
