Then and now pictures reveal extent of flooding three years ago

Almost three years ago, on November 21 2016, an area in south Bristol made national and international headlines as it was hit by a flash flood.

Around five feet of water flooded Whitchurch Lane which resulted in filthy streets and around 15 wrecked cars.

Blocked drains were blamed for the problem which trapped some residents in their homes for at least two days.

Bristol Live has searched the archives for pictures and resident recollections of the floods and the aftermath.

Before and after

Residents, some who had lived in the area or more than four decades, claimed they had seen nothing like it in years.

Doreen Sharman said: “I have lived here for 47 years and I have never seen anything like this before.”

Mud, leaves and dirt swept through the street as heavy rainfall on November 22 2016 worsened the situation.

Mr Toogood said: “It [wasn’t] a massive amount of rain, but it only got like this because of leaves and mud which [had] blocked drains and should have been cleared.”

Shop assistant Christine Granger, 62, described the scene outside her home on Whitchurch Lane, including two submerged cars, as looking “like a river”.

Residents were relieved as the water was cleared away by Tuesday afternoon (22 November) after ‘the drains were struggling to cope with the water,’ the Environment Agency claimed.
