'Their faces were a poem' - Spanish media react to Liverpool defeat to Wolves ahead of Real Madrid tie

Liverpool’s defeat to Wolves on Saturday has created plenty of headlines.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 in the Premier League clash at Molineux. An own goal from Joel Matip followed by finishes from Craig Dawson and Ruben Neves handed Liverpool another dismal away defeat.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now lost their last three league matches on the road and are without a win in their last four in total in the four flight. It means their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League by virtue of a top-four finish are hanging by a thread.

They could, of course, still qualify by winning the actual Champions League itself this season. But standing in their way are the team that beat them in last season's final.

The first leg against Real Madrid takes place at Anfield on February 21 and Liverpool will need to produce a vastly improved performance if they are to take a lead over to the Spanish capital for the second leg on March 15. And the Spanish media have been reacting to the Reds' Molineux humiliation.

“Every week, the Reds show again that it can still be worse,” the report in AS reads. “Julen Lopetegui thus exacts his particular revenge after the elimination suffered against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

“Wolves went over a team that adds up, after their visits to the Community Stadium in Brentford, Amex Stadium in Brighton and Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton, their third consecutive game away from home in the Premier League conceding at least three goals .

“And the worst thing about Liverpool's situation is neither the casualties nor the serious defensive problems that the Reds are accusing, which is also the case, but rather the road they still have to go over the next 15 days.

“In the next two weeks, Jürgen Klopp's men will have to play the Liverpool derby against Everton, travel to the home of fourth-ranked England, Newcastle, and hosting Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 match.

“Both Joel Matip and Joe Gomez had always proven to be luxury squires for Virgil van Dijk. But, when the Dutchman is absent, their level plummets.

“Jürgen Klopp did not give credit on the bench. By the 11th minute of the game, the Reds were already down 2-0 at Molineux Stadium. His angry and numerous gestures of discomfort and impotence said it all.

“The first five minutes had barely elapsed when the first of the Liverpool defenders left his mark, for the worse, in the match. An own goal very typical of Liverpool in 2022/2023. The faces of the visiting players were a poem.”
