Theatre production telling extraordinary true story of Brazil's student protests comes to Manchester

A play telling the true story of the high school occupations in Brazil is coming to Manchester.

Running at the Millennium Powerhouse in Moss Side for two nights next week, When it Breaks it Burns recounts how the students barricaded themselves inside schools to protest against government cuts in spending.

The occupations, which lasted for around three months, took place in hundreds of schools across Brazil in a wave of resistance to the austerity politics of President Michael Temer.

Fifteen of the students who participated in the protests have created the production to show how their lives were changed forever through their remarkable feat of student activism.

The interactive show which fuses live music, dance and performance enables the students to re-live and share their stories and personal experiences of resilience and rebellion which led to fundamental changes in Brazilian educational law.

When it Breaks it Burns has been produced by coletivA ocupação, a collective composed of students from different districts of São Paulo.

It is directed by Martha Kiss Perone and presented by Contact and Transform.
