Back in February, Newsblog noted the publication of the first issue of a new newspaper compiled by Zimbabwean journalists in exile and printed in Britain and South Africa.
Today, The Zimbabwean's website was launched, making the whole of the tabloid weekly online free of charge. The newspaper and the website, which has been designed by Guardian Unlimited and built by Kitsite, are providing vital information to millions of Zimbabweans around the world about their troubled homeland, while the 10,000 copies shipped into Zimbabwe are being snapped up by people eager to get independent information about the state of their country.
The paper's editor, Wilf Mbanga, says: "We are indebted to many people around the world who have already subscribed to the physical newspaper. The online version is intended to be a complementary information source and will add value to the print version."
"A news blackout is dangerous for any society. The forthcoming general election scheduled for March adds urgency. Our coverage is accurate, fair and balanced. We endeavour to give all viewpoints and everyone - including the government of Zimbabwe - has the right of reply."
