
Large torafugu pufferfish are piled in plastic cases in Monday's early hours for this year's first auction of the poisonous delicacy at a lively fish market in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The city boasts of being one of the largest sources of torafugu in the country. For the auction, 160 kilograms of natural torafugu arrived at the market, 30 kilograms more than last season. The top fish fetched 25,000 yen per kilogram, 6,000 yen higher than last season. In addition to natural pufferfish caught off Hagi in the prefecture and other places, three tons of cultured pufferfish were also auctioned.
