The XFL should keep asking Tim Tebow if he wants to play football

Tim Tebow is currently playing baseball for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets. He’s one step away from making it to the show. The Mets may even bring him up at the end of the year if they are as bad as last year — currently, they are not — so it behooves Tebow to keep grinding away because it would be a great story if he did make it to the majors. The problem is Tebow doesn’t seem to be good enough. That’s why the XFL should continue to check-in with Tebow to see if he can bring some buzz to the startup league.

They apparently already have done so. Tebow told them he wasn’t interested. He is still trying to make it. We’ll see how much rope the Mets give him. He’s hitting an abysmal .125 in 25 games this season. He has 33 strikeouts this year in 83 at-bats. He’s not even making contact. That’s a problem because you kind of need to hit the ball to make it in the bigs.

The problem for the XFL may be that Tebow has no financial incentive to play football. He’s playing baseball because he wants to. It’s a goal. It has nothing to do with money. Tebow can make a ton of money just doing television and promotional appearances. The XFL may not be able to pay Tebow what he would command. It’s not as if the league has a bottomless pit of money and Tebow would be the highest paid player by a country mile. If he’s not the best in the league then that will breed contempt from his teammates and other players. It’s almost more complicated if he does play in the XFL.

That shouldn’t stop the league. Tebow would be ratings gold. He’d sell out every stadium he plays in. He’s a draw. The XFL supposedly went after Colin Kaepernick as well. The XFL is searching for its star. Tebow would be it if he just quit baseball and put a helmet back on.
