The XFL is testing out a variety of different rule changes to differentiate themselves from the NFL and the fledgling AAF, which includes a brand-new way to handle overtime.
According to XFL commissioner Oliver Luck, the XFL plans to implement a soccer-style overtime rule – similar to penalty shootouts.
Each team will line up on opposite ends of the field at the five-yard line. From there, they will each get five opportunities to score, and whoever scores the most times will be crowned the winner.
The league is still trying to work out how they will determine which teams goes first, as well as how many points to award each team for scoring in overtime.
“The best players are deciding overtime and there is the fairness aspect,” Luck commented. “It also gets done quickly.”
Quickness is definitely a priority for the new XFL. They are also planning to implement a 25 second play clock, down 15 seconds from the NFL’s 40 second clock.
The XFL, which has eight franchises – including one in Seattle – will begin their season on February 8, one week after the Super Bowl.
Rosters have yet to be announced, as the league is waiting for NFL roster cuts in early September.
Announcements about team names and colors are expected to happen sometime in July.
